The 1978 Santa Barbara Earthquake: The Train Wreck

Just ten minutes after the earthquake, a freight train was moving at approximately 50 miles per hour through Goleta when the conductor noticed a kink in the tracks. The train derailed, but fortunately no one was seriously hurt. It might have been a different matter, however, if the Amtrak train scheduled to arrive later in the afternoon had gone through first.
