Santa Barbara Array

The Santa Barbara Array is an experiment managed by Ralph Archuleta at the Institute for Crustal Studies. Field maintenance is being done by students assistants who also work for the PBIC. This provides additional training in field work that is hard to get any other way.

There are currently twelve seismometers deployed throughout Santa Barbara. The purpose of the experiment is to examine local seismic activity, and to investigate how seismic waves move through the ground in the Santa Barbara area.

Sites

Graduate student Elizabeth Cochran organized the experiment in October of 1999. An article appeared in the Santa Barbara News Press explaining the purpose of the experiment and requesting homeowners to volunteer their backyards for the experiment. Ten of the sites are located in places of residence while the other two are buried at Santa Barbara High School and Santa Barbara Junior High respectively.
